GreenSpur Renewables are an exciting early-stage company who have invented a new low cost revolutionary Direct Drive - Permanent Magnet Generator (DD PMG) for the offshore wind energy industry.

The company’s heritage is in electromagnetic innovation and one of its founders Hugh-Peter Kelly is a recognized international expert in this area with multiple patents granted internationally.

What’s the vision?
GreenSpur’s evolutionary Direct Drive - Permanent Magnet Generator (DD PMG) has been designed specifically for the offshore wind market, where it can deliver significant cost reductions at multi-MW levels. These are needed to create a “subsidy free” global market, which providing this goal can be achieved, is forecast to expand to £300bn by 2030.

GreenSpur’s USP is they can replace scarce and expensive rare earth magnets with ferrite, a cheap and abundant alternative. This is potentially a real source of cost reduction as ferrite magnets are 1/30th the cost of rare earth magnets by kg.

GreenSpur have built a small team of experienced electromagnetics engineers and set a project objective to design from first principles a new DD PMG that would:

  • Only use ferrite magnets, i.e. remove a reliance on rare earth magnets.
  • Be viable at a multi MW level, i.e. in the 6MW to 15MW range (offshore wind turbines).
  • Would deliver significant Levelised cost of energy (LCOE) reductions via CAPEX and OPEX savings.

So, where do you fit in?
The ‘Lead Mechanical Engineer’ will join GreenSpurs team to lead the delivery of an Innovate UK project to test and validate the scale-up of their direct drive permanent magnet generator gearbox technology for large-scale wind turbines.

GreenSpur require an experienced individual who can lead all of the mechanical engineering focused activities for the delivery of their pre-commercial 250kW unit at the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult’s National Renewable Energy Centre in Blyth, Northumberland.

The Lead Mechanical Engineer will be working hand-in-hand with the founder, Hugh-Peter Kelly and will involve significant time at OREC in Blyth, Northumberland, their modest engineering base in Southend-on-Sea, and a recently opened commercial office in Hatfield, Hertforshire.


  • Lead the delivery of an Innovate UK project to test and validate the scale-up of a direct drive permanent magnet generator gearbox technology for large-scale wind turbines (multi-MW).
  • Develop project specifications, technical studies, preparing cost estimates.
  • Identify engineering problems and ensure solutions are feasible and can be implemented.
  • Monitor and review deliverables to ensure compliance with project requirements and initiate appropriate corrective action when needed.
  • Support the technical founder in the delivery of the technology roadmap.
  • Liaison with external subcontract resource and technology vendors, deliverables review and integration with internally developed technologies.
  • Development of patentable innovations to enhance GreenSpur’s core technology portfolio, working with the company’s technical founder and IP attorneys to draft new patent specifications.

 What do we require?


  • 5+ years in industry.
  • Experience with rotating electrical machines and/or direct drive/PMG technologies.
  • Experience managing complex technology development projects mechanical/ electro-mechanical focus.
  • Leading teams of CAD/test/project engineers/technicians.
  • Innovate UK, EPSRC, Horizon 2020 project experience will be beneficial.


  • Experience of CAD packages (Solidworks preferable).
  • Familiarity with FEA packages (eg: ANSYS, OPERA, COMSOL, MagNet)


  • B.Eng or B.Sc (or equivalent) in mechanical engineering with electrical engineering content. 
  • Chartered Engineer (C.Eng) or working towards.
